Don’t react to your health. Protect it.

Take a moment and perform a simple exercise. Walk over to your medicine cabinet and think about what you see.

There will likely be a common theme if you are among the average population. What are these medicines and pills designed to do?

Are they proactive medicines, or are they reactive treatments? Most likely, there are many reactive treatments and remedies.  What is meant by being reactive or taking a proactive medicine or supplement?

Well, the difference is in the name.

A reactive medicine or supplement is what you see most commonly on store shelves. If you get a cold, the medication you take to help with your cough or reduce your fever is given after these symptoms start. Nausea medicine is taken after your stomach is upset, and there is no reason to take a fever reducer if your temperature is normal.

This is big business for the pharmaceutical industry.

One source states that in the United States alone, 2.9 billion dollars are spent on over-the-counter medications that treat cold and flu symptoms.

That is big money, and worse is that this is money not spent on prevention, just managing symptoms. Every year, millions of people dump pharmaceutical companies’ products into their bodies without thinking, “how could I keep this from happening in the first place.”

So, what about proactive products?

What about products that are designed to boost your overall health? Products that have been shown to shore up your immune system, reduce inflammation and help keep all your systems running as they should.

As it is often said in the military and sports, the best offense is a good defense. And a good defense begins with your total body health. A robust immune system, healthy blood flow, and low inflammation throughout your body are all things that can help you fight against the nasty common culprits of misery.

Providing a full-body defense.

A few thousand years ago, men began to look at their health seriously. They wanted to get down to the cause of these ailments they faced. And how to prevent them from happening.

Modern medicine began its birth in the Greek areas with a man called Hippocrates. He looked to treat the whole body and find ways to keep it healthy. His famous line, “all disease begins in the gut,” has started to hold more water. It has now been found that 60-70 percent of all immune cells are found in the digestive system.

And through herbs and other remedies, he began to treat those with afflictions. There are now many things used in those days that modern science has found to have some extraordinary properties. This is a list of two of the most used. And what we have discovered about their benefits.  You may be surprised that you have these sitting in your kitchen, and you may also be surprised by what we know about them.

Olive Oil

Healthy fats are what separate olive oil from the rest of the oils. It has caused it to be recommended by health professionals worldwide, and with its many additional benefits, it’s easy to see why.

Olive oil is loaded with health-boosting monosaturated fats and has many potent compounds called polyphenols.

There are more than 8,000 types of polyphenols, and they are regarded as “lifespan essentials,” meaning they help extend the life and your well-being. The reason for this is the fact that polyphenols are potent antioxidants. Antioxidants reverse damage to your cells from the environment, aging, and your lifestyle.

With these properties in mind, science began looking into olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is the healthiest form. It is processed with no chemicals or heat; just pure oil pressed from the fruit.

The primary polyphenols found in EVOO are oleuropein and oleocanthal. These are believed to reduce morbidity and slow the development of cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. The polyphenols found in olive oil have also been found to be anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory.

Now a look at the healthy fats, all olive oil is composed of up to 83% oleic acid (more than any other oil). This is a type of monosaturated fatty acid with inflammation-fighting and anti-cancer properties.

EVOO should be the first oil you think of for your health and great flavor. Sprinkle it on salads or take a few tablespoons straight. Either way, it’s an excellent way to bolster your intake of potent antioxidants and healthy fats.

Sage

Sage has been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine worldwide and is thought to have originated in the Mediterranean. It can be found fresh, dried, and available in essential oils and extracts.

Modern science has been studying sage to discover its properties and why it’s so prevalent in many cultures. What they have found is quite extraordinary.

Alzheimer’s and dementia: Traditional medicine has long prescribed sage for those with declining mental function. Researchers used sage extract on rats and humans with Alzheimer’s. Participants in the study experienced a reduction in neuropsychiatric symptoms and an overall increase in mental attention. Another study found that participants given sage oil saw an increase in their speed of recall in memory tests. They also reported an overall improvement in alertness, calmness, and contentment.

Diabetes: Sage has been proven to lower glucose levels in animal studies. The researchers concluded that sage has a common drug for diabetes like effects on fasting glucose levels and that sage may help prevent type 2 diabetes. In another study where obese mice were given sage extract, scientists concluded that “sage presents an alternative to pharmaceuticals for the treatment of diabetes and associated inflammation.”

Cholesterol: Participants were given sage tea for four weeks during one study. Researchers found an improvement in lipid profiles, with lower plasma LDL cholesterol and higher HDL (good) cholesterol levels. The effects were even seen two weeks after treatment.

Fighting obesity: Being overweight contributes to a slew of other medical problems. Using the extract of common sage, researchers wanted to develop treatments for obesity that did not involve medications or procedures. An animal test showed that the extract inhibited fat absorption in the pancreas leading to a decrease in overall body weight in subjects fed a high-fat diet.

Menopausal symptoms: A long-held belief is that sage tea could relieve hot flashes and related menopausal symptoms. In 2011 Swiss researchers substantiated this belief. Patients were treated once daily with a tablet of fresh sage leaves for two months. There was an apparent decrease in hot flashes, with severe hot flashes being reduced by 79% and very severe flashes being eliminated.

Anti-Diarrheal: A study conducted in India found that sage extract inhibited gut mobility and spasmodic activity in the gut. This gives support for the ancient use of sage for diarrhea and colic.

Sage is clearly a very potent herb that doesn’t just make great seasoning and tea. And it should be a staple in every pantry. Let’s look at another herb that has been used just as long throughout human history and has some remarkable characteristics.

Oregano

With its intense, warm flavor and a subtle hint of sweetness, this herb grown among the mountains of the Mediterranean region is a staple in many cuisines worldwide. It can be found fresh, dried, or as an oil, and in all forms, it is said to be highly beneficial for your health.

One teaspoon of oregano has 8% of your daily allowance of vitamin K. It fights bacteria and reduces inflammation, so let’s look at this beautiful gift from nature and see what science has found out.

Antioxidants: The build-up of free radicals in your body has been linked to many chronic diseases like cancer and cardiovascular disease. Oregano and its oil are high in free-radical fighting antioxidants. The oregano oil has been found to have high amounts of carvacrol and thymol, two potent antioxidants.

Fighting bacteria: There are compounds found in oregano that have strong antibacterial properties. Studies have shown that oregano oil helped block the growth of 23 bacteria known to cause human infection.

Anti-cancer properties: The high antioxidant level in oregano neutralizes free radical damage and may also aid cancer prevention. Some studies have shown that the powerful components of oregano may help kill cancer cells.

Fighting viruses: Some studies have shown that oregano may protect you against viruses. The antioxidant carvacrol found in oregano inactivated norovirus within one hour of treatment. Also, they found that this substance inactivated 90% of the herpes simplex virus within an hour after treatment.

Reduce inflammation: Chronic inflammation is believed to contribute to developing heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune conditions. The antioxidants in oregano can help rid the body of free radicals and reduce inflammation. In laboratory tests, the main antioxidant found in oregano was shown to reduce inflammation by as much as 57%.

Extra virgin olive oil, oregano, and sage are timeless staples of a Mediterranean lifestyle, and they are packed with health benefits. The key is finding high-quality products that have preserved the potency of the ingredients found within them.

This is easier said than done. Grabbing a cheap shaker full of oregano and using it to benefit your health will be different from finding something organic and grown in a natural environment.

If you want to add the health benefits of oregano, sage, and olive oil to your diet, consider a company processing it right and maintaining the maximum number of antioxidants and other beneficial compounds in these valuable products.
