What Are Probiotics? Your Comprehensive Guide to Gut Health

Print
1 2 3

Probiotics are bacteria that line your digestive tract and support your body’s ability to absorb nutrients and fight infection by supporting healthy digestion and strengthening the immune system. Approximately 80% of your immune system is actually in your digestive tract. According to digestive experts, our optimal gut flora balance should be about 85 percent “good/friendly” bacteria” and 15 percent “bad/other”. Without enough good bacteria, your gut microorganisms become imbalanced, and your system can become a breeding ground for bad bacteria. Bacteria such as yeast, viruses, fungi, and parasites can lead to many adverse side effects including digestive disorders, autoimmune disease, Candida; and skin issues as well as frequent colds and flu.

Why Are Probiotics Important?

The good bacteria that “live” in your gut work like a well-oiled machine when they are in balance and primarily support our bodies to:

•    Digest and absorb certain carbohydrates. Without good gut bacteria, your body cannot absorb certain undigested starches, fiber, and sugars. The friendly bacteria in your digestive tract convert these carbohydrates into primary sources of important energy and nutrients in just the right amount.

•    Produce vitamins, absorb minerals and eliminate toxins. Probiotics help in the production of both vitamin K and B vitamins and promote mineral absorption. They also aid in metabolism and the breakdown of toxins.

•    Keep bad bacteria under control. A large part of the influence of the "bad" bacteria is on your intestinal lining (mucosal barrier) that is over 300 square meters, or about the size of a tennis court. Simply stated, friendly bacteria compete with the bad guys for room and board, but since beneficial bacteria are more at home there, they win most of the battles for nutrition and attachment sites within your colon.

•    Prevent allergies. Friendly bacteria train your immune system to distinguish between pathogens and non-harmful antigens, and to respond appropriately. This important function prevents your immune system from overreacting to non-harmful antigens, which is the genesis of allergies.

•    Provide vital support to your immune system. Beneficial bacteria have a lifelong, powerful effect on your gut’s immune system as well as your systemic immune system.  The bacteria play a crucial role in the development and operation of the mucosal immune system in your digestive tract. They also aid in the production of antibodies to pathogens.

What Ailments Can Probiotics Help Relieve:

The strongest evidence to date finds that probiotics can also aid in the control and prevention of:

•    Food and skin allergies in children

•    Vaginitis and urinary tract infections

•    Premature labor in pregnant women

•    Inflammatory bowel disease like IBS (4)

•    Recurrent ear and bladder infections

•    Chronic diarrhea

New studies underway may soon prove that probiotics can extend even farther, relieving many other minor and major ailments, from colds and flu to certain cancers.

The Bad News:  Unfortunately the foods we eat today contain little to no probiotics and many actually contain dangerous antibiotics that kill off the good bacteria in our bodies.  Most people, including children, are in need of a probiotic boost due to the use of prescription medication, particularly antibiotics, as well as high-carbohydrate diets, the consumption of chlorinated and fluoridated water, and conventional foods, such as non-organic meat and dairy that contains antibiotic residues. These chemicals kill off probiotics in your system, which over time damages your digestive tract. (2)

The Good News:  We can restore and maintain our gut’s healthy balance by doing our best to eliminate the foods that feed bad bacteria and start consuming probiotic-rich foods and dietary supplements.

What Probiotic Supplement is Right for Me?

There are many types of strains of probiotics and the health benefits experienced with one probiotic strain may be completely different from those seen from another probiotic.  Certain strains of probiotics support immunity, others digestion and some even help burn fat and balance hormones. If you want to use probiotics to help with a specific health concern, it is important to choose the right probiotic for the right condition. Your stomach acid today destroys most probiotic supplements before they ever get to your digestive tract, which makes choosing an effective probiotic that will actually work as it claims to be a challenge.

What to look and “NOT” to look for in a Probiotic Dietary Supplement:

•    Sugar: Sugar is not a good food source for probiotics. Prebiotics are the food source meant to keep probiotics alive. A synbiotic is a supplement that contains both prebiotics and probiotics. The best synbiotics contain healthy plant starches and fiber.

•    Living vs. dead: “Live and active cultures” is a better bet than “made with active cultures.” After fermentation, the product may be heat-treated, which kills off both good and bad bacteria (extending shelf life).

•    Bacteria type: “Live and active cultures” does not necessarily mean that the kinds of bacteria the product holds have been proven as beneficial. The bacteria strain should consist of two names and two letters: the genus, species, and strain. If the label lists two names, it could be any one of hundreds of bacteria without research or proven health benefits behind it.

•    Potency: This is where it gets tricky. Most probiotic products don’t list a number of bacteria their products contain, and the amount that’s effective depends upon many qualifiers. Health benefits can occur with 50 million CFUs for certain conditions and may take as many as 1 trillion CFU for others. The higher the number the better. The Food Standards Code claims that at least one million live bacteria per gram are necessary for yogurt and other fermented drinks to provide the 10 billion CFU needed for health effect.

Many people turn to nutritional supplements when they are at their most desperate and in need of help. What they may find are wild product claims, mistruths, and a sea of inferior products with flashy labels all claiming to be "the best." There are literally thousands of people slapping labels on everything from probiotics to diet pills, posing as legitimate manufacturers. The dietary supplement industry is an unregulated "wild west" fraught with deception, false hope, and misinformed choices.

How is one to know the good from the bad?

Pur Nutraceuticals offers a suite of 100% Naturally Made in the USA superior quality dietary probiotic supplements specifically formulated with clinically proven strains for children and adults to restore and/or maintain and happy and healthy mouth and gut.

PUR Nutraceuticals  was born out of personal struggle. Their founder contracted Lyme Disease from a tick while hiking in New England. While undergoing long-term antibiotic therapy, his physician recommended he take "the best quality probiotic" he could find to counteract the deleterious effects of the antibiotics. He quickly realized that this was easier said than done, and choosing any nutraceutical is a leap of faith. His quest to find the highest quality probiotic turned into an avid interest in not only probiotics but also the nutraceutical industry as a whole. This interest soon turned into a mission to help others, an obsession for uncompromised quality, and a company now known as PUR Nutraceuticals.

“The best a consumer can realistically do is to research a company online, trust online reviews, or their own empirical evidence. This is where we step in. We are part Research Company, part Consumer Advocate, and our vetting process borders on neurotic.  When we find a company of interest, we travel to their facilities, put on a lab coat and the funny hairnets and start to dig. We tour their labs and manufacturing facilities, speak to their technicians, and interview the companies in person. We ask hard questions and focus on the company's experience, expertise, ethics, and vision. We then begin objective third-party testing to verify the nutraceuticals EXCEED potency and purity claims. We also insist that the products are not only made in the U.S. but ALL raw materials are sourced in the U.S. also. Only after our exhaustive research do we broach the topic of manufacturing for PUR Nutraceuticals. Then we slap OUR label on it!” said Pur Nutraceuticals

PUR Nutraceuticals was initially founded to solve a personal health problem.  It is now their mission to be an honest and uncompromising company that their family, friends, and customers can trust to look for to health and well being.
