Managing Stress in the Modern World

Stress is a natural bodily response; therefore, it cannot be wholly eradicated from our existence. The stress hormones (Cortisol and Adrenaline) act as our innate survival instinct and govern our reactions to a perceived threat through the “fight, flight or freeze” responses to perceived danger.

A normal amount of stress can act as a motivating force, this can help you to meet deadlines, achieve your goals, and protect you in times of perceived danger.

That being said, an overload of stress through worry, overwork, family issues, and many other factors, can seriously harm you. Too much stress raises your heart rate, impacts your breathing, and affects your cognitive function and mental acuity. Excess stress harms your natural bodily function and can be detrimental to your entire well being, including your immune and digestive system.

So how much stress is OK?

As human beings, stress is unavoidable, but when it begins to negatively impact your life each day then it becomes a cause for concern. It is natural to feel mildly stressed every few days. The demands of modern living are high. The difference in understanding when it is becoming too much depends on each individual as a person. Some people cope with stressful situations and life challenges better, or perhaps they have the mental and emotional ability to take on more. This doesn’t mean that those who struggle with stress are weak or any less of a person. Each person needs to become adept at understanding themselves as a unique person and what triggers their stress.

How can you manage stress better?

There are many ways that we can manage stress better. Taking time out and a break from whatever is causing stress can help to reset and gain perspective. When we are stressed, our sleep and ability to “switch off” and relax suffers greatly. The body is not designed to stay in a constant state of stress. It is this state of continued stress that can lead to mental health issues, lowered immune function, and several other diseases or chronic conditions.

Here are a few ideas for how you can healthily manage stress:

  • As mentioned above, take time out. Having a break from whatever is troubling you helps your body and hormones to regulate themselves again. It is important to practice self-awareness and develop a greater understanding of stress and how it affects you on an individual level.

  • Exercise! Exercise is a proven method to help relieve stress. It does not need to be formal gym exercise, any activity that gets your body moving for at least 20 minutes or so as often as possible (but ideally 3-5 times weekly) can help to combat stress.

  • Focus on food. Eating tends to suffer sharply when stress hits high levels for a sustained period. This can manifest as over-eating as well as under-eating. Focusing on eating well is self-care. When you meet your nutritional needs, this can help to strengthen your body and all its functions.

  • Talk to someone. A lot of the time, we become stressed when we bottle everything up. Sometimes just talking to a trusted friend or loved one can help to ease the pressure. If you find it hard to speak to someone close to you, look out for support groups or professionals that can assist in helping you to work through stress.

Hopefully, these ideas have helped you somewhat. We must remember that life and modern living is not easy or plain-sailing- we will all experience highs and lows. How we respond to stress is something that we can all work on as individuals so that we can support ourselves and those around us with compassion and understanding.

Some supplements can be beneficial in easing the symptoms of stress. Here we look at Botana and their products to aid in stress relief.

Botana, founded in 2014, has a goal to utilize science and their understanding of health and biodiversity. They practiced and researched for several years before starting their farm. For four years after starting their farm, they utilized many different methods to regenerate the land and build soil. They used techniques from Korean Natural Farming, Permaculture (Masanobu Fukoka, Bill Mollison), Biodynamics (Rudolph Steiner), and from Dr. Elaine Ingham (living soil food web.)

Over time, they created a product that is pure on all fronts. Botana’s unique and passionate methods allow them to extract all the beneficial components of the hemp plant.

Botana’s techniques and interests led them to discover 'spagyrics,' which was a 'true' way to make a full-spectrum extract of plants or herbs since there was an additional process to add the minerals. Their growing methods have allowed them to produce herbs, which on a quality scale, have been unmatched.

“We feel regenerative agriculture is the key to sustainability since you are farming carbon and locking it into the soil and building biodiversity. This is the honest and most effective way to produce food as medicine. Not only are we seeing a drastic increase in mammals, reptiles, insects, fungi, and amphibians on the property, but we have seen and large increase of microbes under the microscope, and trees come back from the dead, as we are also slowing water down on the property. We use the harmony of nature to enhance our gestures and nature responds positively. We feel our final product is a gesture of this passion, bringing oneself closer to the harmony within” - Botana

This can be backed up with science as it has been shown that cannabinoids, or terpenoids, or cannabinoids which activate our cannabinoid receptors help maintain homeostasis on a cellular level and detox the cell. Botana provides pure tonics to address the toxicity of modern-day living.
