No one likes having acne and skin discoloration on the face or back. Yet this skin condition is quite a common struggle for many people from adolescence and sometimes well into adulthood. The common culprit is a pubescent hormone.  Painful and sometimes pimply skin can prove to be a nightmare.  Did you ever think that all those throbbing pimples might have been trying to send you a message?  Perhaps they were screaming out to you to make some changes in your life or in your diet.  Recent studies have shown a strong correlation between stress, diet and acne. But you are not to blame for not understanding your skins warning signs. Until recently, dermatologists did not completely understand “pimple talk” themselves.

Healthy diet

For a long time, acne has been treated as a problem at the skin level. Traditional treatments have included topical creams and sometimes antibiotics.  New research has forever changed the way acne will be treated. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, showed a significant relationship between diet and acne. The results of this study specifically indicated that people who consume a diet high in carbohydrates increase their chances of suffering from acne.

This comparative study evaluated the effect that diet has on the prevalence of acne. Two diets were evaluated.  Members of the first group ate a diet with a high glycemic index, which consisted foods of foods that contained “bad” carbohydrates.  Foods with “bad” carbohydrates include refined sugar, white bread, white potatoes, and white rice. The second group was told to eat whole grains, fish, fruits and vegetables, which are much lower on the glycemic index. Subjects within the second group had 51 percent less pimples after 12 weeks. This test, therefore, indicates that a healthier diet promotes healthier skin.

Feel good

Stress is considered one of the main culprits when it comes to acne, especially in adults. This happens because, when your body is stressed, the increase in stress hormones. There is a link between acne and stress, and research has proven this link. According to www.acne.org “when we experience stress, our adrenal gland goes into overdrive. Androgens (male hormones), which this gland produces, increase. Higher androgen levels can lead to more acne. This is especially true in women, who produce a much larger percentage of their androgens in the adrenal gland than men. This may explain why stress seems to affect women more than men when it comes to acne.” Exercise is one of the best ways to relieve stress. Cardiovascular workouts are great for the body and mind. By getting your blood pumping, you are increasing your body’s endorphin levels. Endorphins send that “feel good” message to the  brain – washing those blues away.
