Stay Supple During Winter!

Winter can be a tricky time for the body. Once the cold settles into your bones you can be plagued by stiffness and sore joints. And perhaps the busyness of the holiday season means you aren’t working out as often as usual. But! Don’t despair, read on for ways to stay supple in winter!

Movement is vital for the body. Staying still was never meant to be the human way and moving our body comes with a multitude of short-term and long-term benefits. The movement supports your bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue- the skeletal system is much like a machine and it needs activity to keep it in tip-top form.

Of course, daily living has a fair amount of stress and time constraints, and these may be felt more heavily as we move toward the end of 2021. The end of the year is a time of completion after all. In saying that, you can support your mental, emotional and physical wellbeing far more soundly if you can maintain an exercise regimen. Don’t even think of it as exercise, just say to yourself “today is a new day, and today I need to move!”.

Here are 4 ways to stay supple in winter to help you!

  1. First things first. Make some time. If you can manage just 20 minutes out of your day, then that will be enough if you make each movement count. Focus on your whole body; movements that utilize different muscles groups and joints simultaneously can be highly effective to promote strength and suppleness. Aim to work the lower and upper part of the body and across different planes of movement, for instance: side lunges, reverse lunges, forward raises for the shoulders and cross-body exercises that incorporate your core muscles.

  2. Do something different. Over time your body will become accustomed to the same movements and movement patterns, and they won’t feel as much of a challenge anymore. The body needs a certain amount of weight-bearing and progression to maintain the prospect of benefits, such as strength, suppleness, improved muscle tone, and better posture. Try a new exercise, move in a different direction, add a new stretch or warm-up exercise. The possibilities are endless!

  3. Always do a warm-up. The warm-up is just as important as the main exercises you want to complete. Without an adequate warm-up, you can end up injuring yourself. A good 5-7 minute warm-up gets your heart rate up gradually and prepares the muscles and joints for the movements to come.

  4. Engage with what you enjoy. We are more likely to stick with something if we enjoy it. If you like to dance, dance, if you enjoy running, then run, if you prefer to walk, walk! Doing something that you can’t engage with will not encourage you or motivate you. The type of exercise you do should be something that challenges you, benefits you and your body, but that you ultimately look forward to doing.

Have these pointers helped? If you are on the lookout for something new and engaging, we have found it for you! Barre classes can be incredibly beneficial for improving your suppleness, muscle tone, joint strength, and posture. They are also great calorie-burners as they involve so many different exercises and movements.

Here’s your new favorite Barre class- It’s called The Dailey Method!

The Dailey Method Barre class
The Dailey Method is a one-of-a-kind barre practice that is based on alignment and balance to create the most efficient, effective, and safe full-body workout.

The Dailey Method was founded by Jill Dailey, who is a true pioneer of the dance barre fitness revolution and the first barre studio on the West Coast. A degreed Kinesiologist, Jill soon found that her true passion was helping people transform their lives through fitness. Seeking the most advanced methods to sculpt the body, Jill became an early trainee of the famed Lotte Berke method. She opened her first studio in San Francisco in 2000 and never looked back.

What is The Dailey Method?
Focusing on core conditioning, stretching, and full-body alignment to strengthen and condition, Jill’s classes soon built a buzz in San Francisco. Students love the strength, confidence, and sense of community that comes from The Dailey Method practice. Women and men were talking about the challenging, fresh, and evolving nature of classes.

Classes range from a heart-pounding Interval class to Dailey Barre, as well as more restorative stretching and meditation classes.
