Supporting Optimal Health

Nine out of 10 Americans are missing key micronutrients. This deficiency is due to a variety of factors: mass food production, additives, and preservatives to extend shelf life, and poor food choices, such as convenience foods and takeaways. Regardless of these elements, the bottom line is that most people aren't consuming enough nutrient-rich foods to meet all their basic vitamin and mineral needs.

Why are micronutrients so important?

Micronutrients form the fundamental nutrition that your body needs to function and cope with its energy demands, immunity, healing, hormonal balance, digestion, fluid balance, bone health, and lots more.

A deficiency in micronutrients can contribute to poor health, and impede growth and development. Imagine the engine of a car that is missing numerous small, seemingly insignificant parts, however, the lack of these parts causes the engine to stall and malfunction repeatedly. It’s the same with your body!

So what are the micronutrients? Micronutrients include vitamins and minerals that are essential for your body.

Micronutrients include the following (in varying quantities):

Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Vitamin E, Zinc, Magnesium, Iron, Copper, Iodine Chromium

Some of these may only be needed in small quantities, and yet a deficiency in any of them can seriously impact your health and wellbeing. The human body is a fine machine that needs to be taken care of in order to do its best for you!

If you were not totally aware of the importance of micronutrients, worry not! It is never too late to take steps and mark a way forward for change. And in many instances, given that so many of us are deficient in micronutrients- life-changing decisions can be implemented. Any change that improves the quality of your life is a major move forward!

So, the next question may be, how can you balance out these all-important micronutrients to ensure you are getting what you need?

Food is evidently one of the best ways to improve your micronutrient intake. People that consume a varied diet from all food groups are naturally in a better position to be receiving what they need. The main point here is: avoid restrictive diets that may impede your ability to get what you need from food. This may include calorie-controlled diets and so-called “fad” diets. If you are already in poor health, a restrictive diet may only exacerbate your condition.

Here are some tips for you!

  • As noted above, aim to eat a varied and inclusive diet. As a guide, this should include vitamin and mineral-rich foods: dark green vegetables (such as broccoli, spinach, and kale), red/orange vegetables and fruit (sweet potatoes, peppers, and carrots), beans and legumes, nuts and seeds, and starchy vegetables like potatoes and corn.

  • Buy food that is organically grown as much as possible. Modern living means that the food we eat often loses its nutritional value before it even reaches our plates. If you have a garden, you could research how to grow some of your own vegetables. You could attend a local farmers market where the freshness of food is almost guaranteed!

Supplements that enrich your body with a balance of micronutrients can also help to support your health and wellbeing. In fact, supplementation is one way to fast-track your way to better health as many supplements nowadays have an enhanced level of bioavailability. This means they get to work quickly to support you and balance out any deficiencies.

An important aspect of good nutrition is Micronutrition (vitamins and minerals). Micronutrients play a role in converting food to energy; building and repairing tissues and DNA; manufacturing neurotransmitters, hormones, and other modulators in the body; breaking down and detoxifying xenobiotics and medications; and maintaining growth, reproduction, and health.

According to research by the USDA and other organizations, the American diet is lacking micronutrients.

“What's more, while the recommended intakes (e.g. %DV, DRIs, EARs, RDAs) are designed to meet the minimum needs of some healthy individuals; they are not designed to meet the requirements of all individuals, especially the chronically ill”- Dr. C Vitamins
