Healthy Vision: Take care of your eyes!

Taking care of your vision should be a priority, just like eating healthy and engaging in physical activity. Having healthy vision can help keep you safe when you are driving, while at work, home or school, participating in sports, or taking part in recreational activities. Fortunately, many eye problems and diseases can be treated if caught early.

Millions are diagnosed with eye disease daily, but many have eye problems and don’t know it. Over 30 million Americans suffer from eye disease (as Cataracts, Glaucoma or Macular Degeneration), a number projected to double in the next decade as Baby Boomers age.

According to the newest study, 22.3 million Baby Boomers have cataracts, a leading cause of blindness worldwide. Surgery can eliminate cataracts, but preventative methods including antioxidant intake, proper nutrition, and early detection can limit this need.

What you need to do

Getting your eyes checked is the first step to finding help. To make sure you keep seeing clearly, get a comprehensive dilated eye exam as often as your eye care professional recommends. An eye care professional will examine your eyes for signs of vision problems or eye diseases. It's the best way to find out if you need glasses or contacts or are in the early stages of an eye disease.

You should have a comprehensive dilated eye exam regularly to check for common eye problems. If you haven't had an exam for some time, schedule one this month. CDC's Vision Health Initiative and the National Eye Institute are encouraging Americans to take care of their eyes to make sure they can see well throughout their lives.

Visit an eye care professional if you have decreased vision, eye pain, drainage or redness of the eye, double vision, or diabetes, or if you see flashes of light, floaters (tiny specks that appear to float before your eyes), or circles (halos) around light sources.

There are six easy ways you can help protect your vision:

1.    Get a comprehensive dilated eye exam for yourself and your family members.

2.    Know your family's eye health history. It’s important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with an eye disease or condition since many are hereditary.

3.    Eat right to protect your sight—in particular, eat plenty of dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard greens, and fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids such as          salmon, albacore tuna, trout and halibut. Taking vitamins and antioxidants may also benefit your eyes health.

4.    Wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing activities around the home, such as painting, yard work, and home repairs.

5.    Wear sunglasses that block 99 percent to100 percent of ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation.

6.    Clean your hands prior to taking out your contact lens and be sure to cleanse your contact lenses properly to avoid the risk of infection.

Better Health

Taking care of your eyes also may benefit your overall health. People with vision problems are more likely than those with good vision to have diabetes, poor hearing, heart problems, high blood pressure, lower back pain and stroke, as well as have increased risk for falls, accidents, and depression. Among people age 65 and older, 54.2 percent of those who are blind and 41.7 percent of those with impaired vision say their overall health is fair or poor. Just 21.5 percent of older Americans without vision problems reported fair to poor health.

Eat right and “Drink Your Eyes Healthy®!”

Eat right to protect your sight—in particular, eat plenty of dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard greens, and fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, albacore tuna, trout and halibut.Taking vitamins and antioxidants may also benefit your eyes health. You can try OJO fortified eye care nectar, full of vitamins healthy drink closed in ready to drink small bottle.

OJO® fortified eye care nectar and OJO® quickly dissolving eye care crystals contain the vitamins and supplements that were clinically shown by the Age-Related Eye Disease Studies (AREDS) to help protect and preserve vision. Those landmark studies, the first of which was published in 2001, were funded by the NIH (not by a vitamin company), and studied over 4000 people for 10 years. The original AREDS Study and found that a combination of vitamins - specifically beta-carotene, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and zinc - reduced the risk of severe visual loss from eye diseases such as macular degeneration by approximately 25% over 10 years - a truly ground-breaking result currently unequaled by any other nutritional study for any condition. The follow-up study, AREDS 2, which was published in 2013, validated the original study and found the exact same results. In that study, Lutein and Zeaxanthin were substituted for beta carotene due to the increased risk of lung cancer in smokers taking beta carotene.

As millions, Americans suffer from eye disease. OJO was formulated to be an alternative to the difficult to ingest AREDS vitamins taken by millions of Americans. OJO offers a new preventative and compelling benefit to consumers, is the first of its kind.

About company:

Insightful Solutions, LLC, established in 2009 in Long Island, NY, developed OJO fortified eye care nectar under the direction of Dr. Jodi Luchs, MD, FACS, the founder and CEO of the company. After years of recommending the AREDS vitamins to his patients, Dr. Luchs realized that, despite the important therapeutic and preventative benefits of the AREDS vitamins, their multiple pill-related side effects made them intolerable to many eligible patients.

One morning while preparing for cataract surgery, an idea came to Dr. Luchs, now casually known as “Dr. OJO.” Since so many people have difficulty taking these important vitamins in pill form, why not create a great tasting functional beverage alternative based on the AREDS 1 & 2 studies, and include some additional natural supplements to provide expanded eye health benefits? Such a visionary eye health beverage would ensure that patients could get the eye care they desperately need in a modern, enjoyable, and convenient way.

Today, OJO fortified eye care nectar is available in two flavors for retailers across the country as well as at www.ojonectar.com. The formulation offers the millions of people at risk for, or currently suffering from eye disease, the protection and preservation their eyes need. OJO Crystals, the only once-daily stick pack powder containing a full daily dose of AREDS 2 supplements, are also available on OJOnectar and OJOcrystals.com in three flavors.

Dr. Luchs has published numerous journal articles on eye diseases throughout the ophthalmic literature, in addition to two books, and has lectured nationally and internationally. Dr. Luchs is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American College of Surgeons, and the Nassau Academy of Medicine.
